BLACK BIRDS

Black is a difficult colour for painters. Black tends to dirt too easily other colours when mixed together and uses to attract more attention than desired. Some artists try to avoid it and even some masters recommend don't use it at all.

I'm just the opposite, black fascinates me.

Black represents taking over risks, the attraction of the void, a fantastic background that makes any dull colour seems bright .... So painting a blackbird doesn't frighten me, on the contrary, it's a pleasure.

Moreover, the viewer is always in my mind when I'm painting and black birds don't use to be very popular. So I must hold myself.

But this time I've found a black bird that might please everybody,  a rosy starling (sturnus roseus) that shows a rare but beutiful strong contrast of colours.

Sturnus roseus  /  Rosy starling  /  Estornino rosado
  Acrylic on canvas 9.8 x 9.8 inches  /  Acrílica sobre lienzo 25 x 25 cm

I've painted it from a photo by Jiri Bohdal. I've found the picture by chance and thaks to it I've known the page of this artist, a really wonderful page where to see loads of great photos. You can even buy some of them in high-resolution if you want (recommended). Here is the link, if you're a natural world lover you will enjoy it.

http://www.jiri-bohdal.com/en.php

A BIZARRE PROJECT

2014 is the 4th centenary of the death of El Greco (famous Greek painter who lived and worked in Toledo-Spain). So there will be scores of related events all over Spain.

I've been invited to take part in one of them, but it turns to be a really bizarre project. The project is carried out by "La Carpa - artists and creators from Getafe", a society  to which I'm proud to be a member.

Let's imagine 42 different artists with 42 different styles painting a single work. The subject is an enormous painting by El Greco, "The burial of the Count Orgaz"; and the aim is to obtain a same size version of it (180 x 140 inches). Therefore we have divided the whole image in 42 equal parts and every artist has to make his own version of one of them. At the end, we will fit together the parts, as in a giant puzzle.

"The burial of the Count Orgaz" by El Greco (180 x 140 inches)  /  "El entierro del Conde Orgaz" (4,6 x 3,6 metros)

A real madness.

The outcome will be exhibited in the Cathedral of Getafe next year.

I've just finished my part and I show it bellow. Of course I'd like to share the whole project so I will keep you informed.

My part, acrylic on wood (25,6 X 24 in.)  /  Mi parte, acrílica sobre madera (64 x 60 cm)

I've also included another image where the area I've painted is marked.

Maybe I'm in advance but I was looking forward to starting the new Bird Series work (coming soon).

I've painted only the marked area / He pintado sólo el área marcada

2th Bird Series (definitely)

At last I've decided. This will be the new format for the 2th Bird Series (a 9.8 x 9.8 inches acrylic on canvas). That quicker sort of  work is more suited to my present mood, I feel like going faster and doing things simpler.

This sitta europaea (eurasian nuthatch) had been one of my favourites since the start of the bird series, but I've being delaying it and now it has got a place of honour.

As for the picture I've used as a reference, is a photo by Antonio Pestana from Spain. Antonio takes really great photos about wild life. You can admire more of his pictures in the following link:

http://www.antoniopestana.es

It's worth a thorough visit.

Sitta europaea / Eurasian nutchatch / Trepador azul
9.8 x 9.8 inches acrylic on canvas / Acrílica sobre lienzo de 25 x 25 cm

Al final me he decidido.

MAYBE THE START OF THE SECOND BIRD SERIES

This is the last bird that I've completed. It is a lilac breasted roller. Now I'm loking for a new format to the next chapter of the Bird Series, and this is a first model. I'm not decided yet, so I can´t say wether this will be the first issue of the Second Bird series or not. Anyway I'm plenty satisfied of the painting, although I think that maybe it is a bit away from the model established by the 19th-century illustrators.

Emjoy of the image while I try to make my mind about it. I've painted the bird from a photo by Catherine Lanneluc, a very kind persone with very interesting photos about wild life. You can see more pictures by Catherine in the next link:

http://www.nundafoto.net/portfolio/browse?user=3

Coracias caudatus  /  Lilac breasted roller  /  Carraca lila
Acrylic on canvas / 19,5 x 15,6 inches / Acrílica sobre lienzo / 50 x 40 cm

BEVILACQUA & CHAMORRO

My last picture shows two playmobil figures characterized as Bevilacqua y Chamorro, the main characters of a popular series of detective novels in Spain by Lorenzo Silva. The colour and the hat of the male figure resembles the uniform of the Spanish Guardia Civil, the police organization to which belong the couple.

The picture could be considered a portrait or a still life. Anyway is a picture with message: I try to reflect on the ways in which fame is recognized.

In the old days you knew that a character was famous because it was portrayed by an artist (take Ulysses for example), but today you know it because plastic toys with his features are manufactured in series (as Jack Sparrow or Darth Vader for example). That means merchandise has become some sort of popularity meter. But do not misunderstand me,  I'm not critical or opposed to this. On the contrary, I think it's wonderful, they're just the times in which we have been called to live.

Bevilacqua y Chamorro  /  Acrylic on canvas attached to wood  /  23.6 x 13.8 inches

MAGICAL MOMENTS

This is my last work with toys. I actually started it a year ago, but I was not convinced and left it leaning against a wall. Yesterday I went back, made some corrections an this is the outcome.

Still life with toys / 19,5 x 27,3 inches / Acrylic on canvas

In this still life I chose only objects that were made of plastic.

I try to recover some childhood memories, moments of innocence when we could mix all kinds of figures and build beautiful stories. I think we tend to lose this ability. We lose the flexibility to mix different things, with different scales and qualities. At the end we are doomed to lose the ability to innovate and imagine.

I only want the viewer to recover some of those magical moments.         //

SUMMER LEISURE AND CHILD DRAWING

In summer I usually stop my projects, specially if I travel. This time hasn't been a exception, as I have gone to Cantabria (in the North of Spain).

On these occasions I like to carry a minimum painting set consisting of some brushes and two acrylic colours, black and white.

I enjoy myself painting simple subjects, executed in grisaille, and from time to time I get something interesting. Here I show one of the last.

By Daniel Dvran

And while I was painting, my kid was drawing.

When I can, I take my son to see some exhibitions. He likes and recognizes Dali and Picasso. So I feel proud and think he's turning into a genius when he gets a picture plenty of rhythm and movement.

The picture below is a good example. I think this picture might remember a Picasso drawing. Mightn't it?

Y mientras yo estaba pintando, mi hijo estaba dibujando.

BIRD SERIES VIII

BIRD SERIES VIII

With this work I close the first chapter of the Bird Series. Of course there will be more, but I need a period of reflection and perhaps I will make a few changes. I'll see.

IT ONLY TOOK ME NINE YEARS

When I show any of my paintings isn't unusual that someone asks me "How long it took?". I use to answer politely though I think that only matters what the painting actually looks like, not how long it took or how hard you had to work to make it.

For instance, I started the painting shown below nine years ago, and I've just finished it yesterday. So it only took me nine years.

Platalea Ajaja / Roseate Spoonbill / Espátula Rosada
18 x 11.7 inches acrylic on wood / Acrílico sobre madera 46 x 29,5 cm

Of course, in the mean time I've created other works and this picture has spent lots of days (even months) back against a wall. But somehow it has been always in my thoughts.

In other matters, the subject is a Roseate Spoonbill, so called for the beak shape. It was so long ago that I'm not sure about the origin of the picture or the author (maybe not even existed Google). I've only kept a spoiled photocopy that helped me to finish the job. Really sorry I can not name the photographer.

Por tanto he tardado sólo nueve años.

Detalle / Detail

MY FIRST PET PORTRAIT

Summer time in Spain deters acrylic painting practice. Due to high temperatures quick drying acrylics become ultra quick drying. In addition there are scores of irksome duties as are going to the beach, staying up late and so on.

I keep on, but not as fast as I would like. So I suposse is time to show some old works.

Today's pictures are my first and second pet portraits.

They both were made from photos by Pepe Pascual, a good friend of mine and the owner of the cocker spaniel. He isn't a skillful photographer (not even try to be), but frequently a not very good photo gives more freedom to the painter. So I accepted the challenge as full of spirit as the month of May and I've never stopped painting pets.

Coker Spaniel /  19.7 x 15.75 inches acrylic on wood /

STILL LIFE WITH FIGURES

Sometimes I feel like painting a still life and then toys , specially plastic figures, give me the opportunity of elaborating little allegories. In addition, the spectators' imagination uses to be stimulated because some figures in a context always suggest a story.

This time I will show one of this still lifes. I made it two years ago, but it has been lost (and unphotographed) for the last year. Happily I found it yesterday.

Most of my old masters surely should say that the saturated colours makes it seem gaudy or even naive. I don't agree, of course. The colour scheme here possesses a strong significance, since my main aim was to recover the colours of my childhood.

Pirate and Asterix  figures still life  / Naturaleza muerta con figuras de pirata y de Asterix

Acrylic on canvas 19.5 x 15.5 inches/ Acrílica sobre lienzo 50 x 40 cm

BIRD SERIES VII

I started the bird series a year ago and, believe me or not, the first bird I wanted to paint was a robin. I had to establish some limits. I decided to set out with small size birds (not more than 5.5 or 6 inches) and to alternate the different continents.

The first one had to be a European one, and I thought a robin could be a very representative one. And how to choose the reference photos?. Quite simple, I had to feel seduced by it. But... by then I didn't found an appealing enough picture. So I chose other species and go on.

I forgot the subject and a month ago I realised that I had never used a photo by a Spanish author. I'm from Spaish, so I started to go over bird Spanish blogs, and there it was, the pretiest robin I've ever seen. And this way I met the author, Miguel Montoro, whose blog is worth one (and more than one) visit. The link:

Erithacus rubecula / Robin / Petirrojo

Another Pet Portrait

It's time for another pet portrait.

This time the sitter was a boston terrier and the client wanted a seascape background. This sort of commission always implies a lot of trouble.

First of all you need to agree very clearly on what it is they want you to make. In this case, ¿What did they mean with seascape? ¿A sunset? ¿Boats and palms?; And how much room for the portrait itself and for the seascape background?; and so on. Nevertheless, some talk and scores of sketches later I got mi mind around their expectations.

Boston terrier

But then I had to paint it and as Stapleton Kearns says, "The canid is always dead in those deals, and appears only in one out of focus photograph". In any case, at that time I really felt like painting it and I went on. Now I'm proud to have done it.

///

Mary Magdalen

Today I want to show my second time consuming project that have been distracting me from the Bird Series. The subject is Mary Magdalen, an important character in the Catholic tradition. I like this subject because I tnink somehow it is a homage to all the suffering women.

I can qualified this 59 x 59 inches acrylic on wooden as both a quick and a hard work. Quick for it takes me only three sessions of proper painting. But hard because of all the previous treatment that a wooden surfface needs. In addition I paint in a seventh floor flat and such a size didn't go into the elevator.

Mary Magdalen / María Magdalena

It's a dark picture too. I haven't used white paint except for the last strokes in the eyes highlights and the tear.

I wish it to be exhibited in a church. It doesn't up to me, though maybe I will manage. I'll keep you informed.

BIRD SERIES VI

Those who don't live in a tropical country use conceive a romantic idea of what is the jungle. The Jungle, we might think, is adventure, biodiversity, etc. But when we experienced it, our perception change completely. Jungle turns to be danger, snakes, hot, still water, disease, mosquitoes,... Indeed to appreciate and admire it it's necessary to meet another sort of person, someone who feels the jungle is somehow his home.

One of these men is Nilo Arribas Jr., from the Philippines and he is an artist and so he can teach us a lot about the jungle birds of his country. His photos  are really worth seeing. The quality of his works, the serenity of his pictures, tell us without any doubt Nilo is a great natural world lover.

Haethyga Bella / Handsome sunbird / Suimanga Bella

In fact, my last bird painting has been depicted from a Nilo's work. And I would never have known this bird if I hadn't met Nilo's photographs in the internet. So I'm grateful and I invited all of you to see his work and know more about him in this links:

Home sweet home

This is my very last painting. The subject is supposed to be "domestic violence" and the size 13 x 13 inches (acrylic on board). My son, seven years old collaborated on the composition with me.

Maybe a short explanation is needed. As you can see it's titled "home sweet home" but the man is up, breathing free and happy, though the woman is down, crushed against the glass by the man and the sweets. To make this clear I've painted the girl with a down turned smile.

This work, obviously, has proved more time consuming than any painted bird, but not more difficult. Really the main trouble was to place so much detail in such a small size. I expect it will be exhibited soon, I'll keep you informed.

Homo sweet home  /  Hogar dulce hogar

BIRD SERIES V

The internet is plenty of lovers of the natural world and thanks to this blog I am meeting some of them.

Esteban Argerich, an Argentinian photographer, is the last one. Esteban is the author of hundreds of fantastic bird photos, and the author of the picture I have use for this last work. I absolutely recommend nis page:

http://www.fnaweb.org/Esteban_Argerich.htm

not so much for the variety of the species, but because the surprising quality of his pictures. Argerich's fondness for properly done photos is remarkable.

As usual my painting is a 40 x 30 cm acrylic on cardboard. The bird lives in South America, in the area from South Brazil to South Argentina. A pretty little bird.

BIRD SERIES IV

I'm engaged in two challenging but time consuming projects at present. Two paintings aimed to two collective exhibitions in Madrid (Spain).

The first purpose of this blog was to make a permanent on-line exhibition, and many of my recent works are thought for this. But I reckon I can't give up conventional (off-line) exhibitions. They are occasions for confront other artists and good chances to reach a bigger audience.

So I'm sorry to say that my posts might become less frequent by the moment. Nevertheless I expect to return to a normal state in two or three months. Of course I will report about this exhibitions and I will continue posting.

In any case, I want to show my last bird: a chesnut sided warbler. As always this is a 40 x 30 cm acrylic on cardboard.

BIRD SERIES III (WITH AN EXPERIMENT)

I want to start this post with a recent experiment. I was looking for a different way to draw twigs and feathers when I found a bird picture in a postage stamp. The usage of plain colours and the approach to pop style seemed to me simply marvellous, then I went over a bird stamps collection and decided to try a similar work. The outcome can be seen in the picture below.

This time the "sitters" are a couple of collared aracaris ( pteroglossus torquatus ) that I've painted from photos by Erick Gauger ( www.notesfromtheroad.com ) and Kathy & Sam. In addition I've included a butterfly in order to improve the colour scheme. It is an   17.9 x 14.8 acrylic on canvas.

Detalle / Detail

Inspired by this previous work next I took up again the Bird Series and did the picture below. This time is a bird from Malay Peninsula. I've painted it from some photos by Zul Ya Birder  ( http://zurkanain.blogspot.com.es ). And thanks to his page I've discovered a great deal of different fascinating tropical birds that are unknown in Europe (or at least in Spain). I expect that many of them will soon be included in my bird series.
